The Gardening Season has begun!

The gardening season has begun, which means that many will be getting back to work enthusiastically after a long period of inactivity during the winter. Consequently, we see many injuries and complaints during this time. Hence, these tips and advice to help you get the gardening season off to the best possible start.

  • Ensure that you break down your gardening tasks into smaller sections. This helps prevent strain from maintaining the same posture. Take regular breaks.
  • This applies particularly to tasks such as trimming a hedge, which requires reaching a bit further (this puts strain on the region between the shoulder blades).
  • When weeding or planting bulbs/seeds, kneel on one knee, not both. This prevents you from leaning too far forward and overloading your back muscles and vertebrae.
  • When lifting or digging, ensure you pull your navel in slightly (tighten your abdominal muscles) to stabilize your spine.
  • Try to avoid bending and twisting at the same time.
  • When raking or hoeing, try switching sides or hands occasionally to prevent strain.
  • When lifting heavier items, it helps to ask for assistance (for example, with a potted plant or bags of potting soil). Unfortunately, I see many people who thought, “I can do that quickly,” only to experience back pain afterwards.
  • For minor complaints following work, you can initially cool the affected area. Ensure that there is always something between the cool pack and the skin. It is not necessary to do this for longer than 10 minutes per hour.
  • After a day of physical labor, ensure relaxation by lying on your back for a moment with your lower legs resting on a chair. This positions your hips and knees at a 90° angle.
  • Do you still experience complaint

Consultation with the Chiropractors

There are regular get-togethers with the entire team or with the three chiropractors. In this photo, you can see a meeting combined with a delicious meal at De Badmeester at Wassenaarse Slag. Are you enjoying the beautiful spring weather as much as we are?
