TREATMENT OF JAW DISORDERS (TMD)
Whether we are talking, eating, or laughing, we constantly use this important joint. The jaw joint (temporomandibular joint) fulfills an essential function in our daily lives.
Jaw complaints are also described as temporomandibular dysphincter (TMD).
A poorly functioning jaw joint often causes pain and stiffness in the jaw area, radiating headaches, and tinnitus. There are often popping or clicking sounds when moving the jaw. Sometimes the joint locks, making it difficult to open the mouth.
Overloading the jaw due to teeth grinding or clenching is a common cause of complaints. Stress and tension buildup in the body can also lead to jaw problems. Additionally, postural issues and physical trauma frequently play a role in the development of TMD.
During their studies, chiropractors are trained to detect and effectively treat problems in the jaw joint. At Chiropractie Wassenaar, this is done using muscle-relaxing techniques, joint manipulation and mobilization, as well as additional exercises and advice.
JAW EXERCISE
To give your jaws a rest, we recommend this exercise: Relax your cheeks and let your lower jaw drop so that space is created between all the teeth. Gently press your lips together so that your mouth is closed. Now gently place the tip of your tongue against the back of your upper incisors, at the edge of the palate. It is important that everything is relaxed and does not feel forced. Try to make this the normal resting position for your jaws and hold it for as long as possible.
