Concussion and PCS (Postconcussion Syndrome)
A concussion is a minor form of traumatic brain injury that occurs after a hard blow to the head. Fortunately, the body is capable of recovery and usually gets back to normal after a short rest period, followed by gently building up activities. Unfortunately, this does not apply to about 15% -30% of people. Months later, they still have residual complaints. These residual complaints are summarized under the heading “post-concussion syndrome”: PCS.
Unfortunately, it is still not possible to predict exactly what the main risk factors are. Stress, general health, social network and previous accidents are likely to be important. Research shows that athletes in particular underestimate these complaints and often do not get enough rest.
It often concerns the following complaints:
- Cognitive consequences: memory problems, attention problems and concentration problems.
- Physical consequences: headache, fatigue, insomnia, dizziness, ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and hypersensitivity to light and sound.
- Effects on mood: sadness, irritability and anxiety.
American researchers state that 3 subtypes of PCS can be identified:
Vestibulo-ocular post-concussion syndrome, referring to symptoms due to problems with the balance system; dizziness, nausea, tiredness, blurred vision, easily over-stimulated.
- Cervicogenic post-concussion syndrome, referring to symptoms caused by problems in the neck muscles and joints. Headache, neck pain, dizziness and tinnitus.
- Physiological post-concussion syndrome, referring to changes in the metabolism in the brain. This can lead to increased heart rate, rapid fatigue, poorer concentration, less memory.
Three distinctly different aspects of PCS. All three require a specific approach. There is often overlap between the categories and a total approach is important.
Chiropractors at Chiropractie Wassenaar are specialized in functional neurology and can investigate which part of the nervous system functions less well in people with PCS. Then we make a personal treatment plan for specific rehabilitation, based on the latest insights from America. Think of a combination of stimulation of the vestibular organ, eye motor training, balance training, exercises with the Interactive Metronome (timing) and chiropractic corrections. With this method, we can still improve a long time after the accident. For more information, please contact our practice.
